The Himalayas are characterized by different kinds of environments different kinds of altitudes and because of different altitudes different vegetation and life forms. Glacier melting and flooding from glacial lake outburst floods has increased at a much greater and faster rate in recent decades (1950s as baseline).
A significant increase in high magnitude flood events has been observed in rivers in the north-western Indian Himalayas. In the last three decades a 5.5% increase in river discharge has been observed on the Tibetan Plateau attributed to glacial melting. In the Trim River basin, runoff has also increased by 13%.[9] Today, the amount of rain is the same but the number of days when it rains has decreased leading to pouring rain, affecting agricultural yield mostly negatively.
With a 2.5°C warming, glacier melt and loss of snowpack over the Himalayas are likely to threaten the stability and reliability of northern India’s mainly glacier-fed rivers particularly the Indus and Brahmaputra. Greater investment in water storage capacity would be needed to take advantage of higher spring flows and offset lower flows later in the year.
